Nourish to Flourish

What have you done lately to nourish yourself? Your body? Your spirit?  Your mind? Your heart?

I love the word, nourish.  It feels so rich, warm, and supportive.  Like a cozy blanket, a soft candle, and kind words.  It’s something we don’t always think about or invite into our lives enough.  Let’s get more of it!

If we want our lives and our businesses to feel and be fulfilling, it is important to bring in elements that support us, fill us up, energize us, motivate us and nurture us.  How can we show up resourced without, well, being resourced!  To function optimally, we must be intentional with what we say, what we put in and on our bodies, our energy, how we move through the day, how we rest, how we express gratitude, how we prioritize, and how we play.

The definition of resource is “a stock or supply of money, materials, staff, and other assets that can be drawn on by a person or organization in order to function effectively.” (Oxford dictionary) If we are operating on an empty tank, or even a low one, we aren’t able to bring our full selves into the situation, the conversation, or the experience.  Just like on an airplane, where they say to put your oxygen mask on first before assisting another person, if we can put our own oxygen mask on first, we are able to be more efficient, effective, and impactful.

Nourishing ourselves can look different for everyone.  What nourishes one person, can be super draining for another, so create your own toolbox.  Take the “should” out of it.  I like to say “Don’t should on yourself.”  Just because your friend loves her sunrise run, and it feels nourishing to her, doesn’t mean you need to start getting up at 5am and go run 5 miles.  Yes, discipline is important, and we don’t always get to do what we want to do.  But we are in choice around when, and how we nourish ourselves.  And in times of stress (which, let’s face it in today’s world seems like too often), it is even more important.

When you are designing your nourish list, think of your body, your mind, your heart and your spirit.  What is something you could lean into, start doing, stop doing, or explore that would nourish you?  If you are having a hard time coming up with things, think of a time when you felt at your best.  What were you doing?  Where were you?  Who were you with? What was present?

What nourishes you in a way that whenever you do it, you think, “Why don’t I do that more often?”  Or maybe it’s something you’ve never done before, but you want to try.  Give yourself permission to create the space, the investment of time and/or money, to truly nourish yourself.  It doesn’t have to cost you anything, like drinking 8 glasses of water a day, or journaling, meditating, a home yoga practice, or a walk in the woods.  Or, it could be an investment of money in a membership, a painting class, or working with a nutritionist or coach.  Whatever it is, I challenge you to commit to it for 4 weeks or 40 days, whichever feels better to you, and see what happens.

Create a checklist for yourself of 3-5 things, and keep it where you can see it every day.  Some items might be a once a week thing, others might be twice a month, and still others may be daily or even twice a day.   Create an acronym around it if that helps.  For example, WHOLE might mean W-Water, H-Hug O-Oxygen(breathe) L-Look (notice birds) E-Exercise

Just like a garden, you will thrive when given the right nutrients, soil, light and water.  Visualize what might be possible if you prioritized nourishing yourself for the next 40 days (or 4 weeks).  A month will go by either way.  Remember, nourish to flourish, and see what grows. Feel free to email me and tell me what your commitment is now, and again after and let me know what shifted for you.
